On May 31, 2025, the Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative (BSEI) in collaboration with UrbanBetter Lagos Hub brought children, parents, schools, community members and partners together in Lagos for the maiden edition of the Special Children’s Day Ride with Parents (SCDR) – a vibrant celebration of children, cycling, wellness, learning and community.

The Special Children’s Day Ride with Parents is a flagship programme of the Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative designed to celebrate children, promote physical well-being and create joyful memories through guided cycling experiences. This year’s edition brought together more than 150 people, including school children, parents, community members and partners, with participation from schools in the locality, including Kayron International School and Viridian Kids School.
A Day of Riding, Learning and Fun
The event transformed the day into a mini bicycle festival, creating an environment where children could ride, learn, interact and simply enjoy being active outdoors.
Participants took part in a range of activities designed to combine fun with learning and healthy living. These included cycling safety lessons, free bicycle checks and services, friendly riding competitions, educational talks on air quality, health and mobility, relay races, gifts and prizes, alongside plenty of entertainment and positive energy.
Beyond the excitement of riding, the event provided an opportunity to introduce children and families to the broader benefits of active mobility and outdoor physical activity. Through cycling, participants experienced first-hand how movement can contribute to physical fitness, confidence, independence and social interaction.

Young Riders Learning About Healthy Cities
One of the important elements of the event was the focus on Air Quality and Health. In collaboration with UrbanBetter Lagos Cityzens Hub, young riders were sensitised on the relationship between air quality, the environment and their health.
Urban Better captured the spirit of the event by describing it as a vibrant blend of “fun, movement and meaningful education,” highlighting how the young riders were encouraged to see the connection between healthy people and healthy streets.
The message was simple but powerful: healthy cities begin with healthy streets, and children have an important role to play in shaping the future of their communities.
Creating Confidence Beyond the Bicycle
For Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative, the impact of the Special Children’s Day Ride extends beyond the number of bicycles on the road.
The event created opportunities for children to build confidence, interact with others and develop greater independence through cycling. According to the event report, the programme contributed to increased confidence and self-esteem among children, improved physical fitness, enhanced mobility and independence, and increased social interaction.
These outcomes reinforce BSEI’s belief that cycling can be a powerful tool for personal development and community wellbeing.

Parents See the Difference
The joy of the day was also reflected in the feedback from parents who participated.
One parent described the experience as a memorable day for her children, highlighting the combination of outdoor activity, fun and mental development:
“Today was truly fun for my kids. I want to say a special thank you to Bright Smile and all who made today so memorable for the kids.”
For Bright Smile, such feedback is a reminder that creating opportunities for families to spend time together, stay active and experience the outdoors can have a meaningful impact.
From an Annual Event to a Growing Movement
The Special Children’s Day Ride with Parents was originally conceived as an annual programme. However, the strong interest and positive response have encouraged Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative to explore making the programme a quarterly event or holding it twice each year across cities.
This growing demand reflects the opportunity to use cycling as a platform for bringing communities together around wellness, inclusion, safety and sustainable development.
The vision is not simply to organise more cycling events. It is to create more opportunities for children and families to ride, connect, learn, grow and thrive together.
Riding Towards a Brighter Future
The Special Children’s Day Ride with Parents demonstrates what can happen when cycling is used not only as a means of transportation, but as a tool for wellness, empowerment, inclusion and community building.

With more than 150 people brought together in one day, children riding alongside their peers and families, and partners contributing to meaningful conversations around health, mobility and the environment, the event offered a glimpse of what more active and connected communities can look like.
At Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to ride, every family deserves the opportunity to connect, and every community deserves the opportunity to thrive. Together, we ride towards healthier, safer, more inclusive and sustainable communities – one bright smile at a time.
