A new chapter in our journey to promote wellness, inclusion, safety and sustainable mobility through cycling
We are delighted to announce that Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative (BSEI) has been welcomed as a new member of the Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLOCAT) Partnership, a global partnership working to advance sustainable, low-carbon and equitable transport around the world.

This milestone represents an important step forward for Bright Smile and provides an opportunity to connect our community-based work in Lagos and Nigeria with a growing global network of organizations working to transform the way people and communities move.
Building a Culture of Cycling, One Community at a Time
Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting wellness, inclusivity, safety and sustainable development for children, families and communities through cycling. For us, a bicycle is much more than a means of transportation.
It can be a pathway to better health, greater confidence, safer mobility, stronger social connections and new opportunities, particularly for children and families who may have limited access to affordable and healthy mobility options. Our work therefore goes beyond simply putting people on bicycles. We seek to create an environment where people can learn, ride, connect and thrive.
Through cycling education, community rides, road-safety awareness, active-mobility advocacy and community engagement, Bright Smile is working to build a culture where cycling becomes a meaningful part of healthier, safer and more inclusive communities.
Creating Opportunities for Children and Families
One of the most rewarding aspects of our work has been seeing children discover the joy and confidence that comes with learning to cycle.
Many of the children we work with had never ridden a bicycle before. Through supportive and safe learning environments, they are introduced to cycling from the very beginning -learning how to ride, understand basic safety principles and develop confidence.
Our flagship special Children’s Day Ride with Parents and Community Cycling activities have brought together children, parents and community members around physical activity, social interaction, road-safety awareness and community participation.
For us, these moments demonstrate the wider potential of cycling. A bicycle can create a smile. A ride can create confidence. A community ride can create connection. And sustained access to safe and inclusive mobility can create opportunities that extend far beyond the ride itself.
Why Joining the SLOCAT Partnership Matters
Our membership of the SLOCAT Partnership comes at an important point in Bright Smile’s development.
While our work began at the community level, we recognize that many of the challenges facing communities including mobility, road safety, health, environmental sustainability and access, are connected to broader transport systems and policies.
Being part of the SLOCAT global network gives Bright Smile an opportunity to learn from others, share our experience, build new partnerships and contribute community-level perspectives to the global sustainable transport conversation. As Mr. Tony Eboh, Chair of the Advisory Board of Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative, explains:
“We already know that cycling is not only a healthy and enjoyable activity, but also a powerful pathway to more inclusive and sustainable communities. Joining the SLOCAT Global Partnership will amplify the work Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative is already doing at the community level, helping us connect with more people, leverage our existing groundwork, and expand our impact from the local level to national, regional and ultimately global platforms.”

We are particularly excited about the opportunity to connect our experience from Lagos, Nigeria, with organizations and practitioners working across Africa and around the world.
Connecting Global Ambition with Local Action
Sustainable transport transitions do not happen only through policies, strategies and international commitments. They also happen in communities through the choices people make, the infrastructure available to them, the skills they develop and the opportunities created for them to participate.
This is where we believe Bright Smile can contribute meaningfully to the SLOCAT Partnership. Our experience has taught us that global ambitions must ultimately translate into practical local action.
For a child, that may mean learning to ride a bicycle safely. For a parent, it may mean discovering a healthy and affordable way for the family to participate in outdoor activities. For a community, it may mean creating opportunities for people to connect through cycling. And for policymakers and practitioners, it means understanding how sustainable mobility can be translated into experiences that are meaningful to people in their everyday lives.
Cycling at the Heart of a Bigger Vision
As Bright Smile continues to grow, our vision extends beyond cycling alone. We see cycling as a platform for advancing Inclusive mobility and participation. Our emerging work around Trishaw rides also reflects this broader vision, creating opportunities for older people, people with mobility limitations and others who may otherwise face barriers to participating in cycling and outdoor community activities.
Looking Ahead
Joining the SLOCAT Partnership is not simply a recognition of where Bright Smile is today. It is also an invitation to think bigger about where we can go together.
We look forward to learning from fellow SLOCAT partners, contributing our community experience, developing new collaborations and exploring opportunities to strengthen sustainable and inclusive mobility in Nigeria and across Africa.
We are grateful to SLOCAT for welcoming Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative into the Partnership and for recognizing the importance of community-level action in advancing the sustainable transport transition. As Carly Gilbert-Patrick, Secretary General of the SLOCAT Partnership, noted:
“Global policy spaces set the direction, but it is work like Bright Smile Empowerment Initiative’s that gets us there. Connecting those two ends of the chain is precisely what our Partnership is for.”
We are excited about this new chapter and the possibilities it creates.
From Lagos to the global stage, we remain committed to building healthier, safer, more inclusive and sustainable communities – one ride, one connection and one community at a time.
Welcome to a new chapter for Bright Smile!
